In 2022, Molex’s largest plant in Chengdu, China, was subject to several periods of energy restrictions. It led the facilities, EH&S, finance, and operations leadership teams to work together to improve the facility's economic decision-making and energy management capability. They explored everything from energy use and cost-to-lifetime maintenance of key systems to better understand costs beyond the initial purchase.

As a result, Molex Chengdu invested in several energy efficiency projects aimed at reducing consumption. These projects included installing nearly 400 energy meters across the facility to monitor use rates, leveraging data visualization and software monitoring tools to better understand energy consumption and performance, upgrading air handling units with energy efficient fans, and purchasing a variable frequency drive chiller to reduce overall energy use. And the results have been tremendous with notable reduced energy consumption throughout the Molex facility since implementation. Given that Chengdu accounts for 15% of Molex’s energy use – it was an energy exercise worth exploring.
